Transport & Logistics
Making every mile count aligns with our “efficiency first” philosophy. In the UK and Europe circa 17% of freight transport is delivered by rail yet the theoretical potential is estimated to be circa 30%, almost double. Why does this matter? Road transport emits an estimated 4 times the CO2 of rail, with rail having the added advantage of being orders of magnitudes safer.
Transforming transport will transform the world we live in. Our team expertise stretches back to process design in the first Amazon style warehouse established in the 1990s, to helping both passenger and freight operators achieve more for less. It’s difficult not to mention Elon Musk when considering disruption of key markets.
The latest news is that he is now set to transform utilities, specifically the energy market with Tesla cars acting both as transport and working together to provide District Power Solutions when parked up at home.
This is not only a new paradigm, but an example of making the grid even smarter; cars will charge when the electricity price is low and sell back energy when demand and the price is high; energy storage is incoming and is set to unbalance the business model underpinning traditional baseload energy sources.
Will it work? Most likely the real question is, to what extent will it work? If you’re a broadband provider, you’re probably even more curious about what Elon’s Starlink near earth orbit “accessible anywhere” internet is going to do for the progression of our digital age. Every 14 days an additional 60 Starlink satellites join the constellation. Does this make the existing broadband infrastructure obsolete, or will the answer lie in working out how to work together more intelligently in Elon’s new world? I suspect those involved in water supply are somewhat relieved that Elon hasn’t taken an interest, well at least not yet.
So where does Mercury Applications fit in this market and why does it matter? Almost all utilities rely on complex and ultra high investment asset bases. Many of these asset bases are overstretched and are often a mix of very old and very new technologies.
This presents several problems. Much of the legacy equipment provides little in the way of real-time data in a form that can be processed, while more modern equipment presents a different but equally difficult challenge; too much data, confusing information and little in the way of compatibility, so how can the issues surrounding improving efficiency be tackled?
VulcanIQ is data agnostic and is ideal for bringing together data across silos to provide leadership and operational teams with the insights and information they need to more effectively monitor and manage complex utility systems for greater efficiency. This smart asset management co-ordinates the use of resources for higher utilisation, greater safety and reduced maintenance costs.

In order for everyone in the world to enjoy a first world standard of living, scientists have estimated that we would need the resources of seven planet earths. Something has to change. The challenge is far more pressing than it first appears, not only have we to manage current levels of consumption, but we also have to manage the waste created in the past.
So without leaving everyone feeling too depressed, necessity is indeed turning out to be the mother of invention.
Recycling and environmental clean-up are emerging as truly innovative sectors that are literally saving the planet. The journey has been as fast as it has been remarkable. Sending waste to landfill is now a last resort.
All of this requires complex end to end processing and monitoring to categorise and manage the waste streams, all of which presents complex data challenges. The lifecycle management approach enshrined in the VulcanIQ system supports ever more effective re-processing.
A wide range of complex operational and environmental variables can be monitored in real-time to support ever more effective operations.
Our systems support the creation of Digital Twins to allow operational and analytical teams to monitor and model environments to find new and even better ways of doing things. From extracting platinum from the street dust of London to re-processing waste at Fukushima, sophisticated processing has to be matched by leading edge data management. VulcanIQ is supporting the drive towards joined up and optimised process environments. Contact us for case studies and for a demonstration on how our systems are transforming business.
